four major rules to a healthy salad

Moreover, there are four major rules to a healthy, tasty salad…

1) Stay Away from Iceburg Lettuce. I know “The Wedge” is a cheap and popular salad, but iceburg lettuce has no health benefits whatsoever and there are so many other, tastier alternatives. Try red lettuce, butter lettuce, watercress, spinach, kale, beet greens, baby/micro lettuces, or even Napa cabbage! I promise you won’t even know the difference and these alternatives offer worthwhile health qualities.

2) Use ONLY a Tablespoon (or Less) of Salad Dressing per Serving. You don’t want to circumvent all that hard work of making a salad by loading it down with fatty or preservative-heavy dressing. A simple olive oil & vinegar dressing, whisked with some salt & pepper is a superb classic, or check out our guilt-free buttermilk ranch dressing recipe!

3) Toss Your Salad Early. Despite what some culinary experts might say, tossing a salad with the dressing about 10 minutes before you plan to eat it will allow the flavors to ‘meld’, and your salad won’t seem so flavorless. The trick here, however, is to only make enough salad you plan to eat. Previously-dressed salad does not save well in the fridge.

4. Load it Up with Things You LIKE, so you’ll be more likely to eat it. Such as: olives, artichokes, tomatoes, nuts, chicken, shredded carrots, beets, mushrooms, feta cheese… the options are endless.

Now, just crunch away…. and take comfort in the fact that you’re doing something good for YOU.

Happy Eating!
