This dish originated in Laos and parts of Thailand. This dish eventually spread throughout most of Southeast Asia and each country has its version of papaya salad.
Laos was founded in the 14th Century by Fa Ngum. Laos traces its history to the kingdom of Lan Xang. Vientiane is the country's capital.
In 1954, Laos gained full independence as a constitutional monarchy.
Traditionally spoons were used for soups and white jasmine rice only while chopsticks were only used for noodles. In the Laos culture, most food is handled by hand. There is such significance in eating with your hands in Laos because a staple in Laos cuisine is sticky rice. Sticky rice can only be easily handled by your hands.
Papaya salad is usually served as a meal, a spicy vegetable side dish or a snack by itself.
The dish is served room temperature and can be served with raw vegetables and/or pork rinds.
This single dish combines the four main tastes in Laos cuisine: sour lime, hot chilli, salty fish sauce and sweetness.
